I'm walking backwards
But I'm not counting my steps -
This time, the numbers are in your hands.
I'm walking backwards,
Away from you, but the further I go,
The closer I get to home.
You held my breath and my hand,
But I can't tell if you still want to hold my heart.
And yes, my ears may be bleeding,
But they bleed the truth.
And though I've said all I wanted was to see you smile,
All I really wanted was you.
You've stained these brown eyes blue,
They're traced with shades of you.
I am nothing more than to see
You throwing your pebbles behind me.
Unfinished thoughts are all I have left from us
And an incomplete thought is all that we ever were.
We are nothing more now than a dream
You forgot to have.
And though I've tried to pry myself away from this imaginary fire,
All the warmth I've breathed was from you.
You've stained these brown eyes blue,
They're traced with shades of you.
I am nothing more than to see
You dropping your feathers in front of me.
You'll never know how much it hurts to have to pretend you're lying again.
We both know that I don't deserve to wake up to us dying again.
You've burned this sore heart blue,
Charred with thoughts of you.
I only ever lived to see
You holding me hand
And standing beside me.
But I'm not counting my steps -
This time, the numbers are in your hands.

Waltz
Your half moon fingernails flick
like dust on the ceiling fan blade,
almost-silent whirs that say
somebody is home.
Around my head you draw
imaginary halos
with your pointer-finger,
ring-finger
index-finger tangled
in my pony-tail,
and we're dancing with our backs
to the walls.
I pretend that you're a poem
and read you quick like I'm
performing spoken word
and you're microphone
so close to my mouth
that you reverberate.
And the cat twitches his tail
like he should have been
included in our turned around feet

1-2-3.
It was a waltz after all.

you remind me of a girl
who died in a car crash.
she was from the neighborhood
and had big, dark eyes.
but she is gone, like cookies
left too long to cool,
stolen away in regret.
you remind me of a woman
who had to rebuild herself.
recovering from a brutal rape,
she wrapped herself in artifice
until she was healed enough
to trust again and found
she was stronger for her scars.
you remind me of a woman
so fogged by drugs and drama.

stealing from her mother.

P.S. In stanza three, should that be "can't"?
